Veirordt's law (Karl von Vierordt, 1868) describes a systematic error in human time perception: short durations are overestimated (they feel longer than they are), and long durations are underestimated (they feel shorter than they are). There is an "indifference point" — roughly a few seconds for simple intervals — where perception is accurate; below it, time stretches; above it, time compresses. For founders, this explains a persistent operational failure: short tasks feel burdensome (people avoid five-minute admin), while long projects feel manageable until the deadline arrives. The law predicts that your team will procrastinate on quick wins and underestimate multi-month initiatives — not because they're lazy or stupid, but because their perception of duration is systematically biased.

Project planning
You're seeing it when a team estimates a six-month project as "probably three or four months." Long durations compress in perception — the planning fallacy has a perceptual, not just motivational, root.
Daily operations
You're seeing it when people avoid a five-minute task for days because it "feels like a big thing." Short durations expand in perception, creating friction disproportionate to actual effort.
Customer experience
You're seeing it when a two-minute wait feels intolerable (overestimated) but a two-hour product experience feels "quick" (underestimated). Perceived duration drives satisfaction more than actual duration.

How to Use It

For long projects, add buffers proportional to the duration — perception compresses time and your estimates are structurally optimistic. For short tasks you want done, reduce perceived friction: make them feel even shorter (pre-fill forms, default options, one-click actions). For short waits you want customers to tolerate, add progress indicators or content to compress perceived duration.

Add systematic buffers to long-duration estimates — your perception compresses them. For short tasks you want your team or customers to complete, reduce every friction point — perception expands them. Design product experiences around perceived time, not clock time.

Musk is the most visible case study in Veirordt's law applied to project timelines. His estimates consistently compress long durations: the Tesla Model 3 ramp, Full Self-Driving timelines, Starship development — each was publicly underestimated by factors of two to five. Critics call it dishonesty; Veirordt's law offers a complementary explanation — long durations are perceptually compressed, and the more ambitious the vision, the more compression occurs. Musk's companies eventually deliver, but rarely on the stated timeline. For founders, this is both warning and calibration tool. Your perception of how long a multi-year initiative will take is structurally wrong — the error is systematic, not random. Build mechanical buffers: multiply long estimates by 1.5 to 3x, anchor to reference-class outcomes from comparable projects, and commit to milestones not dates. Veirordt's law means your subjective clock is broken for long durations — design around it.
