The middle path is the principle that optimal system performance often lies between extremes rather than at either pole. Originating in Buddhist philosophy and echoed in Aristotle's golden mean, it applies broadly to systems: over-optimisation and under-optimisation both produce failure. A company that moves too fast breaks things; one that moves too slowly gets disrupted. A system with too much process stifles output; one with too little produces chaos. The model teaches that the search for the ideal operating point is a calibration exercise, not a maximisation exercise. The goal is balance — finding the point where competing forces produce the best sustainable outcome.

Sharp built Four Seasons by finding the middle path between two extremes in hospitality: large-scale hotel chains that sacrificed quality for growth, and boutique properties that sacrificed scale for intimacy. He created a management model — not owning the properties but managing them to exacting standards — that allowed Four Seasons to grow globally while maintaining the service quality of a single-property hotel. Sharp refused to chase either maximum size or maximum exclusivity, instead calibrating at the point where scale and quality reinforced each other. Founders should learn that the most durable competitive positions often exist not at the extremes but in the middle space that competitors on both sides overlook.
