Say's Law

Say's Law — "supply creates its own demand" — holds that the act of producing goods generates the income needed to purchase them. In its strong form: there can be no general overproduction because every seller is also a buyer. Jean-Baptiste Say (1803) argued that production, not money, is the source of demand. The Keynesian critique showed this breaks down in the short run (people hoard cash, demand falls). For founders, the useful lens is: building something valuable and shipping it can generate its own market — but only if the product solves a real problem and reaches people who need it. Supply doesn't automatically create demand; it creates the potential for demand.

Use Say's Law as a corrective to pure demand-side thinking: if you build something people genuinely need, the act of building contributes to the ecosystem that supports it. But don't use it as an excuse to skip demand validation. The law holds in aggregate and over time; it doesn't guarantee your product will sell. Pair it with distribution thinking and product-market fit. Build supply, but make sure it connects to demand.
