Core Idea

A ratio expresses the relationship between two quantities, revealing proportionality that absolute numbers hide. Revenue means little without knowing the cost to generate it. Headcount means little without knowing output per person. Ratios strip away scale and expose the underlying efficiency, leverage, or imbalance in a system. The model teaches that absolute numbers are seductive but often misleading — it is the relationship between numbers that reveals systemic health. A company growing revenue at 50% while costs grow at 80% looks healthy on the top line but is structurally deteriorating. Ratios make that visible.

Finance
You're seeing it when two companies report the same revenue but one operates at a 40% margin and the other at 5%. The absolute number is identical; the ratio reveals entirely different businesses.
Operations
You're seeing it when a team doubles its headcount but output only increases by 20%. The input-to-output ratio degraded — the team is scaling linearly in cost but sub-linearly in value.

For every absolute metric you track, identify the ratio that gives it meaning. Revenue per employee, customer acquisition cost to lifetime value, time-to-ship per feature. Build dashboards around ratios, not just totals. When a ratio trends in the wrong direction, it signals a structural problem that absolute growth can mask.

Every capital decision was governed by ratio analysis, not absolute size. Over 25 years, Teledyne's stock compounded at 20% annually.
