Core Idea

Progressive load is the principle of introducing complexity, demand, or change to a system gradually rather than all at once. Systems — biological, organisational, or mechanical — adapt better to incremental increases than to sudden shocks. A muscle grows under progressively heavier weight; a team scales by adding complexity in manageable stages. The insight is that the same total load applied gradually produces adaptation, while applied all at once produces failure. Progressive load also serves as a diagnostic: how much load a system can absorb at each stage reveals its true capacity and its hidden weaknesses before they become catastrophic.

You're seeing it when a software team rolls out a new architecture to 1% of users, then 10%, then 50%, catching failure modes at each stage. The progressive load reveals bugs that testing alone couldn't simulate.
