Pro-innovation Bias is the tendency to overvalue new innovations, assuming they should be widely adopted while underestimating their limitations, costs, and the adequacy of existing solutions. Proponents of a new technology or method see its potential benefits clearly but systematically discount adoption friction, integration costs, failure modes, and the fact that incumbents often work well enough. In business, this bias drives premature technology adoption, over-investment in unproven tools, and dismissal of proven but unglamorous approaches. It's particularly dangerous in startups, where the excitement of building something new can blind founders to the reality that customers are satisfied with their current solution. Innovation is valuable — but Pro-innovation Bias inflates that value while hiding the costs.

You're seeing it when a team adopts a new platform or framework because it's cutting-edge, without rigorously comparing it to the existing solution's actual performance. The switching cost is minimised; the new tool's limitations are handwaved.
Product Strategy
You're seeing it when a founder assumes customers will eagerly switch to a novel approach without accounting for habit, switching costs, and the "good enough" threshold of existing alternatives. "It's objectively better" isn't the same as "people will adopt it."

Before adopting any innovation, conduct a honest comparison with the incumbent solution. Quantify switching costs, learning curves, and integration risks — not just the potential upside. Ask: "What specific, measurable problem does this solve that the current approach doesn't?" If you can't answer concretely, pro-innovation bias may be driving the decision.
