Preoccupation

Preoccupation is the state of being mentally occupied by something else — so that attention and capacity for the task at hand are reduced. In building and scaling, preoccupation is a hidden tax: the founder worried about payroll, the prospect distracted by a merger, the team member stuck on a previous failure. You can’t get full engagement or clear decisions from someone who’s preoccupied. The discipline is to recognise preoccupation (in yourself and others), name or resolve the competing demand where possible, and avoid adding more load when someone is already at capacity. Meetings and asks that ignore preoccupation get half-hearted input and slow execution.

Check for preoccupation before important conversations or decisions. If someone is clearly elsewhere, name it: “Seems like there’s a lot going on — do we have the bandwidth to do this justice now?” Reschedule or simplify if needed. For yourself: clear or park preoccupying issues before deep work or key meetings so you’re not half-present. Reduce unnecessary meetings and context-switching so the team has space to focus. Preoccupation is often invisible; making it visible is the first step to managing it.

Preoccupation is mental occupation elsewhere — it reduces attention and quality of decisions. Recognise it in yourself and others; address or defer when bandwidth is low. Protect focus and reduce unnecessary load so preoccupation doesn’t block execution.
