Precision Bias is the tendency to treat precise-sounding numbers as more credible and reliable than round ones, even when the underlying data doesn't support that level of accuracy. A forecast of "$4.37 million in revenue" feels more trustworthy than "roughly $4 million" — despite both resting on the same uncertain assumptions. The bias exploits a cognitive shortcut: precision signals expertise and rigour. In business, it infects financial projections, market sizing, timelines, and performance metrics. Teams build elaborate spreadsheets that project revenue to the dollar five years out, creating an illusion of certainty that crowds out honest discussion of uncertainty. The antidote is to match the precision of your claims to the precision of your knowledge.

You're seeing it when a startup's pitch deck shows revenue projections to the penny for Year 3. The granularity implies certainty that doesn't exist, and investors who should know better still anchor on the specific numbers.
Market Sizing
You're seeing it when a strategy presentation estimates the addressable market as "$7.83 billion" rather than "roughly $8 billion." The decimal places add no information but dramatically increase perceived credibility.

How to Use It

When evaluating claims, ask how the precision was generated. If a five-year forecast shows cents, the precision is cosmetic. Use ranges instead of point estimates for anything beyond near-term actuals. When presenting your own analysis, deliberately round to signal honest uncertainty rather than false confidence.
