Core Idea

Margin of error is the range within which the true value of a measurement is likely to fall. Every measurement, estimate, and forecast has one — whether stated or not. The model teaches that precision in outputs does not imply precision in reality. A revenue forecast of $10M with a margin of error of plus or minus 30% is really a statement that revenue will likely fall between $7M and $13M. Treating the point estimate as certain is a systematic error. Understanding margin of error means accepting that all knowledge is probabilistic, and that the width of the margin tells you as much as the number itself.

How to See It

Forecasting
You're seeing it when a financial model produces projections to two decimal places but the underlying assumptions carry plus-or-minus 25% uncertainty. The false precision masks a wide margin of error.
Product
You're seeing it when an A/B test declares a winner with a small sample size. The margin of error is so wide that the "winning" variant could easily be worse — the test didn't have enough data to overcome the uncertainty.

How to Use It

For every estimate, forecast, or measurement, explicitly state the margin of error. If you don't know it, estimate it. Make decisions based on the full range, not just the point estimate. When the margin of error is wide, delay high-stakes decisions until you can narrow it — or build plans robust enough to handle the full range.

As a founder
Train your team to present ranges, not single numbers. "We expect 800 to 1,200 new users" is more honest and more useful than "we expect 1,000 new users." Build plans that work across the plausible range, not just at the midpoint.
