Core Idea

Information Bias is the tendency to seek more information even when it will not change the decision. It manifests as the belief that more data always leads to better outcomes — that another study, another survey, another quarter of results will clarify the path. In reality, beyond a certain threshold, additional information adds cost without adding clarity. It creates decision paralysis, delays action, and produces the illusion of rigour while preventing the thing that actually reduces uncertainty: execution. In business, information bias is one of the most expensive invisible costs. Teams commission research instead of shipping. Founders delay launches to gather more market data. The information feels productive because gathering it is easier and less risky than acting on what you already know.

Product
You're seeing it when a team delays launch by three months to gather more user research data — even though the existing data already pointed clearly toward a direction. The additional research confirmed what was already known and cost a quarter of market momentum.
Strategy
You're seeing it when a board requests another market analysis before approving an investment they've already discussed for six months. Everyone has enough information to decide; the request for more data is a socially acceptable way to avoid commitment.

How to Use It

Before requesting more information, ask: would any plausible answer change my decision? If you'd take the same action regardless of the result, the information is worthless — stop seeking it and act. Set explicit decision deadlines that force action before perfect information is available. The cost of delayed action almost always exceeds the cost of imperfect information.

At SpaceX, he rejected the aerospace industry's convention of exhaustive testing and documentation before iteration, instead choosing to build, launch, fail, and learn from the failure data — which was far more informative than pre-launch analysis. When engineers requested more studies before attempting a landing, Musk's response was to attempt the landing and study the actual results. This wasn't recklessness; it was a systematic correction for information bias. Musk understood that in complex systems, the most valuable information comes from doing, not studying. For founders, his approach demonstrates that execution often generates better data than research — at a fraction of the time cost.
