Gate's Law

Gate's Law (often attributed to Bill Gates, closely related to Amara's Law) holds that we overestimate what we can achieve in two years and underestimate what we can achieve in ten. The short-term overestimate comes from optimism bias and underestimating friction; the long-term underestimate comes from failing to grasp compounding and exponential curves. For founders, this is a calibration tool: expect less in year one-two (things take longer to get going), but think much bigger for year five-ten (compounding effects are enormous). Most people quit in the trough between the short-term disappointment and the long-term payoff.

Discount short-term projections and expand long-term ones. When planning, add friction buffers to the first two years and compound-growth multipliers to the next eight. Use Gate's Law to survive the trough — the period where short-term disappointment tempts you to quit before long-term compounding kicks in. Plan for a slow start and a fast finish.

Gate's Law: we overestimate short-term achievement and underestimate long-term achievement. Discount two-year plans, expand ten-year ambitions, and build resilience for the trough in between. Compounding rewards those who survive the gap.
