Rockefeller was the master of business fortification. He built Standard Oil's dominance not just through scale but through systematic construction of defensive positions: exclusive railroad rebates, control of pipeline infrastructure, vertical integration into barrels and shipping, and strategic acquisitions that eliminated competitors before they could threaten him. Every advantage was layered and reinforcing — attacking any single position was insufficient because the entire structure supported it. Founders can apply Rockefeller's principle by building layered defences: don't rely on a single moat. Stack switching costs on top of network effects on top of proprietary data.
