Duverger's Law states that single-member district, winner-take-all electoral systems tend to produce two-party systems, while proportional representation tends to produce multiparty systems. The mechanism is both mechanical and psychological. Mechanically, third parties win votes but not seats — their support is spread too thin across districts to cross the threshold. Psychologically, voters learn that supporting a third party is "wasting" their vote and strategically switch to the lesser of two evils. Over time, these pressures consolidate political competition into two dominant coalitions. The law reveals a deeper truth about system design: the rules of competition shape the number and behavior of competitors far more than ideology or voter preference. Structure determines strategy.

If you're entering a winner-take-all market, understand that the structure will push toward consolidation — either join a coalition or redefine the game. If you're designing a decision process (elections, governance, voting), know that the format you choose will shape the number and behavior of competitors. Proportional systems encourage diversity; winner-take-all systems encourage consolidation.
