Double Entry Accounting

Double entry accounting is the system in which every financial transaction is recorded in at least two accounts — a debit and a credit — so that the accounting equation (assets = liabilities + equity) always balances. If cash goes up, either a liability went up (you borrowed), equity went up (you earned), or another asset went down (you converted). The system creates an internal check: errors and fraud become visible because the books won't balance. Beyond bookkeeping, double entry is a thinking tool. It forces you to ask: if value moved here, where did it come from? Every gain has a source; every cost has a destination.
