Core Idea

Deconstruction is the systematic dismantling of a complex whole into its component parts to understand how it works, why it works, and where it fails. Unlike simple analysis, deconstruction challenges the assumptions embedded in the structure itself — not just examining parts but questioning why those parts exist and whether the boundaries between them are real or inherited. In business, deconstruction reveals that most products, processes, and strategies are bundles of assumptions accumulated over time. Many of those assumptions are outdated. Taking the system apart and reassembling only the pieces that earn their place produces something fundamentally better.

Product
You're seeing it when a team breaks down a competitor's product feature by feature and discovers that 70% of the features serve internal legacy needs, not the customer. Deconstruction reveals which components actually create value.
Process
You're seeing it when an operations review maps every step in a fulfilment workflow and finds that half the steps exist because of a constraint that was removed two years ago. Nobody deconstructed the process after the constraint changed.

How to Use It

Take a system — your onboarding flow, hiring process, pricing model — and break it into every individual component. For each component, ask: why does this exist? What assumption does it rest on? Is that assumption still valid? Rebuild using only the components that survive scrutiny. Deconstruction works best when done regularly, because assumptions accumulate silently.
