Core Idea

Cunningham's Law (attributed to Ward Cunningham, inventor of the wiki) states that the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question — it's to post the wrong answer. People are more motivated to correct errors than to answer questions from scratch. The model captures a deep asymmetry in human motivation: we're more energised by the urge to fix what's wrong than by the desire to help what's incomplete. For founders, this is a tool for extracting knowledge, feedback, and engagement — sometimes the fastest way to learn the truth is to be deliberately, usefully wrong.

You're seeing it when a deliberately imperfect prototype or beta release generates more detailed feedback than any survey ever did. Users who wouldn't fill out a form will spend twenty minutes explaining what's wrong.
Team & Knowledge
You're seeing it when a proposed plan with a deliberate gap draws out expertise that a blank-page brainstorm never would. People correct more readily than they create from nothing.

How to Use It

Use Cunningham's Law to extract information: ship imperfect drafts, propose intentionally incomplete plans, and let the correction impulse do the work. In product: beta releases and "wrong" prototypes generate richer feedback than surveys. In strategy: propose a flawed plan and let the team improve it rather than asking for plans from scratch. The key is making the "wrong" version specific and correctable, not so bad that it undermines trust.
