Caveman Syndrome is the recognition that our brains evolved for a world radically different from the one we now inhabit. The mental hardware running your decisions was optimised for small tribal groups on the African savanna — scanning for predators, hoarding scarce calories, fearing strangers, prioritising immediate rewards over distant ones. These instincts were survival advantages for hundreds of thousands of years. They are now systematic sources of error. We over-react to social rejection (tribal exile meant death), under-invest in long-term payoffs (the future was uncertain), fear loss more than we value gain (losing food meant starvation), and default to conformity (disagreeing with the tribe was dangerous). When you notice a disproportionately emotional reaction — fear, anger, tribal defensiveness — pause and ask whether the response fits the actual situation or the ancestral one. Create decision frameworks that build in delay between stimulus and response: sleep-on-it rules for major decisions, pre-commitment to data-driven criteria, structured devil's advocacy. The goal isn't to eliminate instinct — sometimes the caveman is right — but to recognise when ancient software is generating modern errors.
