In an autocatalytic reaction, the product of the reaction speeds up the reaction itself. The output is a catalyst for its own production. Growth is not linear; it accelerates. Once the loop is established, the system can escape the regime where it needed external pushes and enter one where it amplifies from within. The strategic parallel: products or behaviours that make their own adoption more likely — each user brings more users, each sale enables more sales — are autocatalytic.
Chemistry gives clean examples: some reactions produce a catalyst that lowers the activation energy for the same reaction. Biology gives more: self-replicating molecules, populations that grow faster as they grow. In business, network effects are autocatalytic — more users increase value, which attracts more users. Viral loops are autocatalytic — each adoption triggers more adoptions. The key is that the mechanism is embedded in the system, not dependent on constant external input.
The danger is symmetry: autocatalytic loops can run backward. A declining user base makes the product less valuable, which accelerates decline. A shrinking ecosystem attracts fewer developers, which shrinks it further. Understanding autocatalysis means identifying the loop, the conditions under which it runs forward, and what could flip it into reverse.

Look for systems where growth begets growth — where the output of the system directly or indirectly increases the rate of production. The tell is acceleration: not just growth, but growth rate increasing over time (until limits kick in).
Business
You're seeing Autocatalysis when a platform's take rate or engagement rises as more suppliers and buyers join. Each side attracts the other; the platform's value is the cross-side network effect. Growth accelerates until market saturation or a competitor captures the loop.
Technology
You're seeing Autocatalysis when an open-source project gains contributors because more users mean more eyes, more patches, and more credibility — which draws more users. The project catalyses its own growth. The same dynamic can run in reverse if key maintainers leave.
Investing
You're seeing Autocatalysis when a asset or strategy attracts capital because past returns attract more capital, which can temporarily support returns — until the loop breaks. The feedback is real; the question is whether it is sustainable or a bubble.
Markets
You're seeing Autocatalysis when a standard or protocol gains adoption because compatibility and ecosystem size drive more adoption. The standard catalyses itself. The risk is a rival loop — a competing standard with its own autocatalytic dynamic.

How to Use It

Decision filter
"Before scaling, ask: is there an autocatalytic loop? Does each unit of output make the next unit easier or more likely? If yes, focus on reaching the point where the loop runs on its own. If no, you are buying growth; unit economics will bite when you stop spending."
As a founder
Build a product or go-to-market where success breeds success. Referral loops, content that drives signups that drive more content, or a marketplace where liquidity attracts liquidity are autocatalytic. The goal is to get the loop running, then feed it enough initial energy that it escapes the zone where it would stall. The mistake: scaling via paid acquisition with no loop. When you stop paying, growth stops. The second mistake: ignoring the reverse loop. If churn reduces value for remaining users, the system can collapse. Design so the reverse reaction has higher friction than the forward one.
As an investor
Distinguish autocatalytic businesses from linear ones. Autocatalytic businesses have a reason growth rate can increase with scale; linear businesses hit diminishing returns. The best outcomes often come from backing companies that discover or engineer an autocatalytic loop early and then scale into it.
As a decision-maker
When allocating resources, favour initiatives that create self-reinforcing dynamics over one-off gains. A process improvement that makes the next improvement easier is autocatalytic. A project that leaves no trace is not. Prioritise loops over events.
Common misapplication: Calling any growth "autocatalytic" when it is just good execution or market tailwinds. True autocatalysis has a clear mechanism: output A increases the rate of production of A. Second misapplication: Assuming the loop runs forever. All real systems hit limits — market size, regulation, or a competing loop. The art is riding the loop while it runs and knowing when it will slow.

Faster Than Normal — Editorial View
The best businesses have a loop, not a ladder. Ladders require constant climbing; loops, once started, accelerate. The question to ask: does each sale, user, or shipment make the next one easier? If not, you are in a linear business. That can work, but it will not compound like an autocatalytic one.
Feed the loop until it runs. Early on, the loop may need external input — capital, labour, or customers — to escape the zone where it would stall. The transition from "we are pushing" to "the loop is pulling" is the inflection. Recognise it and stop overfeeding; overfeeding can create dependency or distortion.
Watch for the reverse loop. Autocatalytic collapse is real: fewer users → less value → fewer users. Defensibility often means making the reverse loop harder than the forward one — e.g. switching costs, data, or habit.
Summary: Autocatalysis is growth that begets growth. Find or build the loop; get it past critical mass; then protect against the reverse reaction.
