AD-AS Model

The AD-AS (Aggregate Demand–Aggregate Supply) model is the standard macroeconomic framework for understanding how the overall price level and total output are determined. Aggregate demand is total spending in the economy (consumption, investment, government, net exports); aggregate supply is total production capacity. Their intersection sets the price level and real GDP. Shifts in AD (e.g. from fiscal stimulus or consumer confidence) move output and prices. Shifts in AS (e.g. from supply shocks or productivity changes) do the same but in different combinations. For founders, the model provides a macro lens: is the economy demand-constrained or supply-constrained? The answer affects hiring, pricing power, input costs, and capital availability. You don't need to forecast GDP — you need to know which side of the model is driving the environment you operate in.

Read the macro environment through the AD-AS lens: is the current pressure coming from the demand side or the supply side? Demand-driven expansion gives pricing power but invites competition. Supply-driven contraction raises costs but may reduce competition. Adjust strategy accordingly — hiring pace, inventory, pricing, and capital deployment should all reflect which side is dominant.
