Business & Strategy
Section 1
Core Idea
A structured checklist of ten dimensions to assess whether a market is worth entering or scaling in: size, growth, concentration, margins, cycles, defensibility, timing, distribution, regulation, and fit. No single dimension decides; the set forces you to score the full picture instead of fixating on one number.

Section 2
How to See It
Strategy
You're seeing 10 Ways to Evaluate Market when a team runs a disciplined go/no-go on a new market using a fixed set of criteria (TAM, growth rate, competitive structure, margin profile, etc.) instead of a single “big market” or “hot space” story.
Investing
You're seeing 10 Ways to Evaluate Market when a pitch or memo explicitly addresses market size, growth, fragmentation, unit economics, cyclicality, moats, timing, channel access, regulatory risk, and team–market fit rather than hand-waving “huge opportunity.”
Section 3
How to Use It
Use the framework before committing capital or roadmap to a new market. Score each dimension; flag weak spots and decide whether they are acceptable or disqualifying.
Decision filter
"Before we bet on this market: have we scored all ten dimensions, and which ones are below our threshold? If we're ignoring one, is that deliberate or convenient?"
As a founder
Run the ten dimensions on your primary market and on any adjacent market you're considering. Use it in board and strategy docs so the table is visible: weak scores (e.g. regulation, distribution) get explicit mitigation or exit criteria, not optimism.
Section 5
Founders & Leaders
Peter ThielCo-founder, PayPal; co-founder, Palantir; investor
Thiel evaluates markets through a small set of sharp questions: Is the market real and growing? Can you win a definable segment? Is the timing right? His "Zero to One" lens — monopoly over competition, secrets, definite optimism — is a refined version of multi-dimensional market evaluation. He insists on one clear reason the market is underrated and one clear path to dominance, which the ten-way checklist helps surface and stress-test.

Porter's 5 Forces
Porter's Five Forces (rivalry, new entrants, substitutes, buyer power, supplier power) are a subset of market structure. The 10-ways framework extends that with size, growth, margins, timing, distribution, and fit — so you get structure plus scale and execution reality.
Tension
Founder Market Fit
Founder–market fit says the team's edge matters as much as the market. The 10-ways list can over-weight market and under-weight "can we win?" Use both: strong market scores with weak fit still fail; strong fit in a weak market has a ceiling.
Leads-to
Product/Market Fit
Honest 10-ways evaluation narrows which markets to pursue. Once you choose, the next step is product/market fit: building and validating a solution that the chosen market will pull. Market evaluation first, PMF second.
Section 8
One Key Quote
— Peter Thiel, Zero to One (2014)"The best entrepreneurs know this: a great company is a conspiracy to change the world; when you share your secret, the right people notice."

Ten dimensions — size, growth, concentration, margins, cycles, defensibility, timing, distribution, regulation, fit — give a reference-level way to evaluate a market before you build or scale. Use the list to avoid one-number stories and to make weak spots explicit.
