Core Idea

The technology adoption lifecycle segments customers by when and why they adopt something new: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, laggards. Each segment has different motivations and needs. The core idea: you can't treat all adopters the same. Early adopters tolerate bugs and want vision; the majority want proof and ease. Build and go-to-market by stage — cross the chasm from early adopters to early majority with a focused beachhead and a whole product.

Use the lifecycle to choose who to serve first and how to talk to them. Early on, lean into innovators and early adopters; use their feedback for product, but don't let them set the bar for "simple enough" for the majority. When you're ready to cross the chasm, pick one vertical or use case, build the whole product for it, and win before broadening.
