The symmetry of ignorance holds that in complex or novel problems, no single participant — designer, user, engineer, or executive — has sufficient knowledge to define the solution alone. Everyone is partially ignorant, and the missing knowledge is distributed across stakeholders. The implication: solutions emerge from structured collaboration, not top-down design. This is distinct from information asymmetry (where one party knows more); here, all parties are ignorant but about different things. For founders, the model argues against building in isolation. Product, market, and operational solutions require surfacing distributed knowledge — through iteration, user feedback, cross-functional teams, and prototyping — because the person with the answer often doesn't know they have it until the right question is asked.
