Business & Strategy
Section 1
Core Idea
Reactivation is winning back users or customers who have gone dormant — stopped using, stopped buying, or lapsed. They already know you; the cost to re-engage is often lower than acquiring someone new. The core idea: treat reactivation as a distinct channel. Segment the dormant base, diagnose why they left, and run targeted campaigns (message, offer, timing) to bring them back before writing them off.

Section 2
How to See It
Retention & Lifecycle
You're seeing Reactivation when "win-back" or "we miss you" emails, in-app prompts, or special offers are sent to lapsed users and a meaningful share return — and when LTV or retention metrics improve because dormant users are recovered.
Sales & CRM
You're seeing Reactivation when former customers or stalled opportunities are systematically contacted with a new trigger (product update, pricing, use case) and some convert, improving pipeline from existing relationships.
Product
You're seeing Reactivation when re-onboarding or "pick up where you left off" flows are designed for returning users so they don't face a cold start and are more likely to stick.
Section 3
How to Use It
Define "dormant" (e.g. no login in 30 days, no purchase in 90). Segment by recency, value, and reason if known. Test reactivation messages and offers — reminder, incentive, or new feature — and measure response and subsequent retention. Receptivity matters: time the touch when they're likely to pay attention. Iterate on message and segment.
Decision filter
"Are we treating dormant users as lost, or as a reactivation pool? If we're not trying to bring them back with a dedicated effort, we're leaving revenue and retention on the table. What's the one trigger or offer that might bring them back?"
As a founder
Build a simple reactivation loop: define dormant, segment (e.g. by last active and past value), run win-back campaigns (email, push, sales touch), and track reactivation rate and LTV of reactivated users. Optimise message and offer; consider receptivity (timing, channel) so they see it when they're open.

Founders & Leaders
Brian ActonCo-founder, WhatsApp
WhatsApp focused on simplicity and reliability so users who left other apps would come back and stay. Reactivation was built into the product: easy return, no friction. Founders can apply this by making "coming back" easy (no re-onboarding wall) and by running deliberate reactivation campaigns to dormant users with a clear reason to return.

Churn
Churn is the rate at which users or customers leave. Reactivation is the flip: bringing churned or dormant users back. Reduce churn and run reactivation so the net loss is lower.
Reinforces
Receptivity
Receptivity is how open someone is to a message. Reactivation works better when the touch lands when they're receptive — timing, channel, and message matter. Pair reactivation with receptivity so win-back messages get seen and acted on.
Leads-to
Retention
Reactivation improves retention by turning dormant users back into active ones. Measure retention of reactivated users separately; if they churn again fast, fix the product or segment before scaling reactivation.

One Key Quote
— Seth Godin"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. The best time to win someone back is when they've just left; the second best is today."

Summary & Further Reading
Reactivation is winning back dormant users or customers. Segment the dormant base, test message and offer, time for receptivity, and measure reactivation rate and LTV. Treat it as a channel, not an afterthought.
