Potential is stored capacity — energy, ability, or opportunity that exists but hasn't yet been converted into action or output. In physics, a boulder at the top of a hill holds gravitational potential energy; it does no work until it moves. In business, potential is the unrealised value sitting in an untapped market, an underused asset, or an underperforming team. The mental model forces you to ask: where is energy stored in my system, and what would it take to release it? Recognising potential is the first step; the harder question is whether the activation energy required to convert it into kinetic results justifies the investment.
