Necessary Repeatability

You're seeing the need for repeatability when a strategy produces one great quarter but can't be replicated. If you can't explain why it worked and do it again, it was luck — not a system.

You're seeing it when a "breakthrough" fix resolves a bug but the team can't explain the mechanism. If the fix can't be reproduced or understood, you've patched a symptom, not solved a problem.

Test every win for repeatability before scaling. The first success is a hypothesis; the repeated success is a system. Build processes that are documented, testable, and reproducible — because what can't be repeated can't be scaled.

Buffett's investment philosophy is repeatability incarnate. He doesn't chase one-time opportunities or speculative bets — he looks for businesses with durable, repeatable advantages: consistent earnings, predictable demand, and management that can reproduce results year after year. His "circle of competence" is partly a repeatability filter: invest where you can reliably repeat good judgment, not where you got lucky once. Founders can apply this by asking of every success: is this repeatable? If a strategy, hire, or product launch worked, codify why and test whether it works again. Scale the repeatable; investigate the unrepeatable.
