Duty of Care

Duty of care is the legal and moral obligation to act with reasonable concern for the safety and well-being of others who could be affected by your actions or decisions. In law, it establishes that certain relationships — doctor-patient, director-shareholder, employer-employee — create enforceable responsibilities. Breaching that duty through action or inaction constitutes negligence. But the concept extends far beyond courtrooms. Any founder, manager, or leader who controls resources or makes decisions that affect others carries an implicit duty of care — to customers, employees, investors, and communities. The model matters because duty of care sets the floor for acceptable behavior: not heroism, not perfection, but the minimum standard of a reasonable person exercising ordinary prudence.

Before making any decision that affects others, ask whether a reasonable person in your position would consider the potential harm and take steps to prevent it. Duty of care doesn't require perfection — it requires that you thought about the consequences, gathered relevant information, and acted prudently. Build systems that make duty of care structural rather than personal: checklists, review processes, escalation paths, and clear ownership of safety-critical decisions.
