Copernican Principle

You're seeing the Copernican Principle when a founder insists "our market is different" to dismiss lessons from adjacent industries — then encounters the exact same problems those industries already solved.

You're seeing the Copernican Principle when a prediction assumes we're at a unique inflection point in history. Most of the time, we aren't. The present feels special because we're living in it, not because it is.

When planning timelines, fundraising, or growth, start with base rates from comparable companies. Resist the narrative that your company is the exception. If the data later proves you are exceptional, adjust. But defaulting to "we're typical" produces far better forecasts than defaulting to "we're special."

Bezos built Amazon with a rare willingness to assume the Copernican Principle applied to himself. His "Day 1" philosophy was an explicit rejection of the idea that Amazon had reached a special, durable position. He treated every advantage as temporary and every success as the base case from which decline was probable. This anti-exceptionalism drove relentless experimentation and refusal to coast. Founders can apply this by resisting the belief that your current success means you've figured it out. Assume your position is not special. Act as though the forces that disrupted others will disrupt you — because they almost certainly will.
