Controlling the Center

Controlling the center is a strategic idea from chess and game theory: the player who dominates the central squares gains flexibility, threat range, and options. In markets and strategy, "the center" is the high-value position — the segment, channel, geography, or capability that confers disproportionate advantage. Controlling it means occupying that position before others, or defending it so that rivals are pushed to the periphery. The center is often contested because everyone sees the same payoff; winning it requires speed, commitment, or a structural edge. The model helps explain why firms fight over key accounts, prime locations, or standard-setting roles: the center compounds over time.

Look for markets or arenas where one position (segment, hub, standard) is clearly more valuable than others, and where players are competing to hold it. The center is usually where volume, margin, or optionality is highest.

In chess and in strategy, the center confers options and threat. Identifying and controlling the equivalent of the center in your domain is a durable source of advantage.
