Constructivism

Constructivism holds that knowledge, meaning, and social reality are not discovered but constructed through human interaction, language, and shared interpretation. There is no "view from nowhere" — our understanding of the world is always mediated by the categories, narratives, and frameworks we bring to it. In politics, constructivism argues that concepts like sovereignty, national interest, and human rights are not fixed facts but social constructs that emerge from collective agreement and can be reshaped. In epistemology, it means that what counts as knowledge depends on the community that produces and validates it. The power of constructivism is its reminder that the structures we treat as natural are often contingent — built by humans and therefore rebuildable.

When a structure feels permanent, ask who constructed it and why. If the answer is "people like us, for reasons that may no longer apply," you've found a point of leverage. Use constructivism to identify which constraints are genuinely fixed and which are socially maintained. In strategy, this means recognizing that markets, categories, and customer expectations are partially constructed — and can be reconstructed by someone willing to change the narrative.
