A commitment device is a choice you make today that restricts your future options in order to enforce follow-through. The mechanism exploits loss aversion: by making failure costly in advance, you remove the possibility of painless quitting later. Odysseus tying himself to the mast is the canonical example — he eliminated the option of yielding to the Sirens before the temptation arrived. Modern versions include deposit contracts, public deadlines, and irreversible announcements. Commitment devices work because willpower is unreliable but structural constraints are not. For founders, the highest-leverage commitment devices are external and irreversible: announcing a launch date publicly, signing a contract, burning the bridge to a comfortable fallback.

Execution
You're seeing it when a founder announces a launch date on social media before the product is ready. The public commitment raises the cost of delay from internal disappointment to public embarrassment.
Finance
You're seeing it when someone sets up automatic transfers to a savings account on payday, removing the option to spend the money. The commitment device bypasses daily willpower entirely.
Strategy
You're seeing it when a company burns the boats on a legacy product line, forcing the organization to make the new product succeed because retreat is no longer an option.

How to Use It

Identify your highest-priority goal and ask: what structural constraint would make failure more costly than success? Public announcements, financial stakes, contractual obligations, and environmental changes all serve as commitment devices. The best ones are irreversible and externally visible. Design the device before motivation fades — the whole point is that it works when willpower doesn't.

As a founder
Before your next major initiative, install at least one commitment device: announce the deadline publicly, prepay for resources you'll only use if you follow through, or sign a contract with a penalty clause. The device should make inaction more painful than action. Willpower degrades under stress — structure doesn't.

Jeff BezosFounder of Amazon; space entrepreneur
Bezos distinguishes between "one-way doors" and "two-way doors" — but when he identifies a one-way door worth walking through, he walks through it fast and publicly. Announcing Amazon Web Services, committing to Prime's free shipping, and funding Blue Origin were all irreversible commitments that forced the organization to make them work. Bezos understands that the announcement itself is a commitment device: once the market knows, retreat becomes reputationally catastrophic. For founders, the lesson is that the best commitment devices aren't personal willpower tricks — they're structural, public, and irreversible. Make the cost of quitting higher than the cost of pushing through, and follow-through becomes the path of least resistance.
