Call Your Bluff

Don't fold to every threat or ultimatum. Assess whether the other side's position is real by examining their incentives and alternatives. Call bluffs selectively — when your downside is manageable and when capitulating would invite more bluffing in the future.

Cohen built his career on the principle that most negotiating power is perceived, not real. He taught that threats, deadlines, and walkaway postures are often bluffs designed to pressure the other side into conceding. His method: calmly test the claim. Ask questions. Slow down. See if the threat holds. Cohen showed that the person willing to call the bluff — politely, with good information — almost always gains leverage, because most bluffs collapse when tested. Founders can apply this in fundraising, vendor negotiations, and competitive standoffs. Don't concede to pressure you haven't tested. The cost of asking "are you sure?" is almost always lower than the cost of folding to a bluff.
